How to work with awkward windows!

It's hard to say where the world's off-center windows come from. Often they're the result of a moved or added partition wall during a renovation. Others were designed that way. But many homeowners who inherit this asymmetrical setup have trouble designing around it. After all, symmetry is an important part of good design. So what are you supposed to do? First of all, don't lose heart. Where there are problems, there are solutions.

Designers pick up where construction leaves off, so it's always a good idea to get a designer involved at the planning stage. That way we can address issues that could pose problems later when it comes time to design and furnish the interiors.

Nevertheless, you'd be surprised how often I see a partition wall butted up against a window like this. If you can't afford to knock down walls in your home, use the tricks here to pull off a well-designed look.

This finished example in a different house addresses the problem. First, the gaps were filled with like-size artwork, then a chair was added below the awkward window to balance the composition.

Another wall was chosen for the focal point here, and the windows were covered with very simple shutters that don't attract attention. You could also use a blind or shade that is very close to the wall color. This will de-emphasize the awkward window.

Here's another solution. If one of the windows appears almost centered, cover the corner window. This will allow for better space planning, like adding two beds, for example, and no one will be the wiser.

Here's a great example of how you can balance a room with an offset window. The drapes and furniture grouping at one end have the same visual weight as the bed and linens. Together they give the room balance.

Built-ins, an armoire, a tall bookshelf or any other piece of furniture with height is also a good option to establish balance.

If your asymmetrical windows overlook an unpleasant scene, such as a neighbor's brick wall, you may want to install wall-to-wall drapes. This will give you more space-planning options, too.

Another trick that works well for asymmetrical windows: Partially overlap the windows with wall-to-wall drapes to reveal only what you want. No one can tell if these windows are asymmetrical or not.
